May, 2004:
not part of a collection
I've got coins in most of my pockets. In our house small change
can be found just about everywhere. Much of this is already out
of circulation (and worthless) and Hila, following in Nadav's footsteps,
likes to play various games with it. A few fistfuls of foreign coins
have also accumulated over the years, and these also generate some
interest every so often. Except, however, for a very short period
of time in my childhood, I can't recall ever actually collecting
coins.
This penny, however, wasn't just inside the plastic bag I uncovered.
It was inside a plastic case in that bag, along with two others pennies
similarly kept. That suggests that I did do at least a bit of "collecting".
Was/is this particular coin worth anything? A bit of web searching
informs me that a 1911D Lincoln Wheat Penny in very fine condition
is worth about $12. I have no idea how the condition of a coin is
measured, but my guess is that the condition of this coin is somewhere
between good and very good. That probably means that the coin, if
anybody wanted to buy it, is worth about $6. I'm neither selling,
nor collecting. I'm simply holding on to the coin - primarily, I guess,
because the fact that it's in plastic casing means that I once thought
it was worth something.
I find it a bit strange that the "head" and the "tail"
don't seem to be aligned with each other. I wasn't aware that this
was the case, and only noticed it while scanning both sides.
