an obsession - then and now

I suppose that the kitchen in my parents' home was rather substantial. At least in comparison to ours today it had plenty of room, and lots of storage space. At least one drawer was devoted to saved lids (there was probably a shelf devoted to jars as well, but I can't be sure about this). These lids served many purposes, though offhand I don't seem to be able to remember what any of these were. Basically they were saved because one never knows when a lid of a particular size is going to be needed. And occasionally that actually happens.

This photograph was taken by my brother when my mother vacated her house after living in it for about 45 years. I found this drawer rather surprising - my recollection is of a much larger collection of lids, and I find it hard to believe that my mother would have actually thrown away any of those that were once saved. There must have been more stored away somewhere that weren't photographed. Of course Mom may have used some of the lids she saved, though again, I have no idea for what.

Today we have an excuse. As a music teacher Tzippi often needs lids as parts of improvised percussion instruments that she brings to her lessons. That means that when I wash the dishes I can put these aside instead of in the trash and nobody becomes suspicious that I'm an obsessive collector of junk. After all, she actually does use some of these every so often, and we never know in advance which size she's going to need. So under the guise of furthering music education I can continue to maintain a family tradition.
