being presentable

There were times, over thirty years ago, when, as an undergraduate in North America, I kept a toothbrush in my school bag. With hindsight I can admit that this was more out of wishful thinking - maybe I wouldn't be getting home on a particular night - than out of any real need for it. But of course there are people who definitely need to have a toothbrush with them. Tzippi, as a horn player, for instance, can't play at a rehearsal or a concert without first brushing her teeth. And of course lots of people keep a hairbrush, and other utensils, in their handbags.

With me, however, it's a bit different, for the rather simple reason that I have no idea when it was that I last used either of these. Judging by the fact that there are hairs on the hairbrush there apparently have been times when it's come in handy, even if I can't remember when these were. And that being the case, even if I admit that keeping these items inside my bag is quite logical, the basic truth is that all they do is sit there. And if that's all that they do, there really isn't any reason to keep them there at all.
