Week 22:       August 15 - August 21, 1991

It's been a couple of weeks already that your mother has had the impression that just maybe what she's been feeling is that you're kicking and moving around inside the womb. Yes, the books tell us that chances are good that you should be doing that sort of thing around now, but who knows, maybe it's been no more than an upset stomach. But lately it's become clear that it really is you. This evening she let me in on the sensation and we were able to have a bit of a duet, you thumping away inside the womb, me keeping the beat on her stomach. It's true that your mother is a musician, but she never expected to be used as a set of drums.

What's more, you're confirming what the books tell us. They write that you're settling into a pattern of sleep and activity, and that you're probably most active when we're resting. I guess that explains why you choose to do your exercises when the two of us want to go to sleep.

When you were ultrasounded your mother didn't want to know whether you're a boy or a girl. That's fine with me - I can live with one more unknown that gets added to all the others we've got in life. But we do have to apologize a bit to you. When we talk about you, and you can understand that we do that quite a bit, we find it a bit uncomfortable to refer to you as "it". That's not the proper way to speak about you. So rather unpurposefully we've started referring to you mostly with the male pronoun. We've got an excuse for this since "fetus" in Hebrew is male. And if this bothers you, we'll apologize at a later time.

Being used as a set of drums wasn't exactly part of the bargain as your mother understood it when she agreed to become pregnant.
