can we really
part this these?
Personally, I found the idea of Tamaguchi pets quite fascinating,
and would have happily adopted one had the idea of an adult playing
with a toy such as this not raised eyebrows. As it was, I tried
to keep an eye on what Nadav did with the one he received from a
friend as a birthday present, hoping that he'd maintain an interest
in it long enough for me to get some vicarious experience with it.
But of course training a virtual animal ran its course after a couple
of weeks at the most, and this toy found itself on the shelf, abandoned.
When it came time to part with it, however, though Nadav was willing,
I still hoped that someday I might learn to play with it a bit.
Bayblade tops came and
went very quickly. By the time that most parents had put out the
funds for a top, either a new craze had arrived, or the top that
they purchased fell apart. To say the least, they weren't the best
made toys, and reading the instructions on how to put them together
while your kids watched impatiently over your shoulder was a true
test of parental devotion. And they were a classic example of a
well orchestrated fad - worth saving if only as a reminder of what
not to buy.
Keychains might not be particularly desirable collectibles in our
family, but when it has a rather hi-tech flashlight on the other end,
it's something that you consider holding on to. After all, when I
was a kid, lasers were part of science fiction, and now they're discardable
toys. This one carries the legend: "DANGER: Laser radiation
- avoid direct eye exposure". And this is called a toy?
Perhaps I shouldn't go as far as saying that there's something special
in the mix of high and low tech that this spinner embodies, but there's
definitely something to be said about it. It's no more than a round
disk of galvanized iron with some sort of reflectors on the top side,
that needs a finger to get spun. But when it's spinning it's lovely
to watch. And of course since it takes up so little space, there really
isn't any reason to part with it.
