I woke up this morning a bit after 08:00 after a (dare I say it?) peaceful sleep. We didn't have any alerts throughout the night, and nobody is complaining. I walked over to my 93 year old computer student, though not really for a lesson. We simply sat and talked. She's presently recuperating from a hip operation and is upset that she doesn't remember how to do the various things we've done on her computer. I tell her that I know many people considerably younger than she is who are less adept than she is with their computers, but this doesn't console her. She never built a safe room, and I guess pretty understandably she thinks that it's worth taking her chances of her house being hit rather than trying to get to a shelter with her walker, or spend the night in a shelter. I agree with her. Today's first alert was about half an hour ago (this was written around 11:00). We didn't have to go to our safe room, but the news is now showing some of the apparently not serious damage in the Tel Aviv area. I guess I should note that for the family whose house was hit, "not serious damage" isn't a very accurate description. The kibbutz dining room still isn't open. The kitchen is open for an hour and a half around noon to purchase food, and today being Friday there was food not only for the noon meal but for Shabbat dinner as well. Phil and Debbie accompanied me to the chadar ochel to get food and we returned with what seemed like an immense amount, though we finished most of it at dinner. Around 13:00 I picked Hila up at a road near the kibbutz to where she caught a ride and she's with us until Sunday morning. Eitan joined us for dinner so there were six of us around the table for an enjoyable meal which we succeeded in finishing before the first of two alerts, both of which ultimately put us in our safe room. Expecting Hila to be with us today, yesterday evening I brought our Set to the room and we played, explaining the game to Phil and Debbie who though they have a set (of Set) didn't know how to play. Of course Hila won, and we even continued playing a bit after the all clear. Today's HaAretz has three full page ads - one calling for an end to the war put out by a large group of left anti-occupation groups (many of which overlap), and two devoted to raising money for shelters in the undeclared Bedouin communities. Full page ads are expensive so it's my guess that HaAretz ran them at a discount. I also have my doubts that they ran in other papers, but I'll try to check tomorrow. Ten minutes ago I was finishing reading an article, expecting to get to bed early (I shower before Shabbat dinner on Fridays) when we had our second preliminary alert of the evening. Our area received its all clear before we received a call to enter our safe rooms. Apparently a missile landed in an "open area", with no injuries, though it seems the Iranians have been using cluster warheads that spread shrapnel over a large area, and the result can be more harmful. Whatever, I'm hopeful that I'll crawl into bed in a few minutes and wake up only in the morning. At least I can hope. Shabbat Shalom! |
