Letters from the Iran War - 2026

I'm starting this at 14:15. What until now had been a quiet Shabbat was interrupted by a preliminary alarm and a few minutes later sirens that are very clearly in our area. We're now in our safe room, and on the television even Hatzor is on the map. Though apparently that barrage is over, we're told that it was quickly followed by another which is keeping us in our safe rooms. The present report is that five missiles were on their way, which is different than the usual only one or two. The later report was that eleven people were slightly injured in a moshav in the area of Beit Shemesh. And then later news showed substantial damage to buildings and cars.

Earlier today we learned that the Houthis entered the fray with at least one missile to Israel. I'm just reporting that without any particular understanding of what it means - other than things seem to be spiraling out of control, which, despite what our leaders tell us about how things are going, I guess is what I would expect would happen. On the other hand, a headline from this evening quotes Vice President Vance - "We're Taking Care of Business, We're Going to Be Out of There Soon". The reports in Israel are that he berated Netanyahu on something today. I'm not aware of the full details, but it seems that Trump would like to get out of this war already and Netanyahu doesn't want to let him, so Vance has been given the job of telling Bibi who's the boss. This evening there have been three missiles to the south, though the television has been on the western classical music channel and perhaps there's been more since I last saw/heard this.

A good example of how much we really don't know has been making the rounds. Nir Dvori is the chief war and defense correspondent for our Channel 12 news (the most watched station). About a week ago, during one of his many reports he said:

Finally, the bottom line is that we are entering the fourth week of Roaring Lion. This will be a pivotal week that will perhaps ultimately lead to the beginning of deliberations on how to continue on the path.

The above is from Google Translate which did a surprisingly good job. Yes, the result doesn't make sense, but neither did the original Hebrew. I guess that when all you have to work with is double-talk, what you get in the end is translated double-talk. This, BTW, has been quoted numerous times, and someone even put it to music.

It's late (01:45), but only late because I was busy reading and Tzippi was napping and we didn't feel that the evening had made its way into night. I'm out of the shower, but I was finished writing substantially before going in. I wasn't waiting to see if there would be more alerts, though just as I sat down to send this a WhatsApp message appeared on my phone - alerts in the north and the middle of the country - so if only to cover all the territory maybe signing off only before going to sleep makes sense.
